Allyson Howard-Green, Deevya Raman, Mark Cordell et al.

This retrospective study examined 111 high-risk patients undergoing CABG with Impella 5.5 or LD temporary microaxial pump support during the same hospitalization between April 2018 and January 2025. Patients receiving ECMO were excluded, and the cohort had a mean age of 69 years. Support was planned in 30% (33/111) and unplanned in 70% (78/111). Survival was 89.2% (99/111) at 30 days and 74.8% (83/111) at one year. Mortality did not differ significantly by concomitant procedures or between the 2018–2020 and 2021–2025 operative periods.

Clinical bottom line

These findings describe survival after CABG with temporary microaxial support in a selected high-risk population. Without a comparator group, they do not establish a survival benefit from support.

Study limitation: The retrospective, supported-only cohort lacks a comparison group without microaxial support, limiting causal interpretation of survival outcomes.
