Dr. Rakesh C. Arora was born in London, Ontario and obtained a Baccalaureate of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario. From there, he next achieved his Medical Doctorate from the University of Toronto in 1996 before moving to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia to undergo his Cardiac Surgery Residency. During his time in his residency in Dalhousie, he completed a Doctorate of Philosophy in the Department of Anatomy/Neurobiology under the supervision of Drs. Andrew Armour and David Hopkins in the field of neurocardiology. More recently, after completing two further years of training at the University of Calgary, in Calgary, Alberta, Dr. Arora has the distinct honour of being first Canadian cardiac surgeon to complete formal training in critical care medicine. In this regard, his clinical investigations have been directed at developing an expertise in the peri-operative care of the patients with cardiovascular disease. Dr. Arora joined the Cardiac Sciences Program and the Section of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Manitoba as an Academic Clinician Scientist in 2006, where he devotes a large proportion of time towards translational research. He has also a strong interest in fostering the development of future clinician-scientists and has supervised several resident trainees and undergraduate students. Dr. Arora is the co-founder of the the CANadian CARdiovascular critical carE (CANCARE ) Society and inaugural Chair of the Society.
